Why Bouchra Jarrar at Lanvin is a Really, Really Good Thing

Things are about to change big time at the House of Lanvin

After weeks of speculation and gossip, one of the major vacancies atop the fashion pantheon has been filled: Lanvin announced this morning that Bouchra Jarrar will be its new artistic director. First of all: who run the world, amirite? Second: we are really into this appointment. We’ve been big fans of Jarrar for some time and girlfriend’s got serious fashion cred, including having worked with Nicholas Ghesquiere at Balenciaga and Christian Lacroix on his couture collections, not to mention she’s one of only three women granted permanent status in the boys’ club of haute couture. She launched her namesake label in 2010 and has been quietly wowing industry insiders ever since.

Though her name has been mentioned these past few months, she wasn’t one of the top guesses until this week (likely only after contracts were signed and Champagne corks popped). Her collections focus more on impeccably constructed, impossibly cool tailored pieces for the modern boss bitch, with only the occasional eveningwear frock thrown in, which makes her an unexpected choice for dramatic, ruffled, glamorous Lanvin. But remember, Jarrar did put in time with Lacroix. The frills will, no doubt, come. But then again, who says Lanvin has to be all pomp and circumstance and sequinned gowns alllll the time? Give me one of Jarrar’s killer coats or perfectly cut trousers any day and watch me #slay.
