Resumés That Pay Off
If you need some extra cash, have spare time on your hands, want to expand your social circle, and are looking to beef up your credentials, then why not get a part-time job? All you need is a resumé to apply.

No clue how to write one? No problem. Here’s the low-down:

Start with your name, address, phone number and email. Align the info in the center, or on the left or right side of the page – just make sure it’s organized.  Easy right?

Next, set an objective. This is where you state your intention to get the job. One example would be: To obtain the intern position with Flare Magazine, where I can lend my enthusiasm for fashion and keen organizational skills to the team.

Now for the main attraction. List your education, including any special certificates that you may have obtained in a section onto its own. Below, create another section for skills and abilities where you can list the extra things you have to offer, for instance a driver’s license or any emergency aid courses that you may have taken. Then, create a section for your interests where you can talk about the things that you love like painting, blogging, or being on the basketball team.

To finish, let your prospective employer know that you have references if they’re interested, but don’t list them on your resumé. Rather, write a quick line such as “References available upon request”, along the bottom.

Tip: Before you hand over your resumé, prepare those references. Choose two to three teachers or other adults you know well (but no relations), and ask them if they wouldn’t mind being used. Be sure to ask in advance so that they aren’t caught-off-guard when their phone rings.

Quick Tips:

  • Present the information neatly and in organized columns
  • Puh-lease review your resume for spelling, typos and grammar errors
  • Go easy on the funky fonts and colourful paper since you want your potential boss to be able to read the information you’ve worked so hard to compile!
