These 6 Hair Colour Trends Are Going to Be Huge in 2018

New year, new hue


Just when you thought the ombre of yesteryear would never go away, a new slew of trends are here to inspire your 2018 colour refresh.

We spoke with Garnier colour expert and Wella Professional Global Artist to find out the shades that are trending now, along with their key maintenance tips and celeb inspo for each. You’re going to love seeing these all over your Insta feed this year.

Bright copper

Best on: Fair skin tones, all hair types

Upkeep: “Bright colours do fade quicker than traditional colours,” says Medina. He recommends washing your hair in cool water every two to three days using a colour shield shampoo and conditioner paired with a leave-in conditioner or a mask once a week.

Nude and neutral tones

Best on: All skin tones, all hair types

Upkeep: “If your hair is dark, you can have a natural tone as your base with pieces lightened throughout to create a more neutral brown,” says Dove. Especially if your hair is dark, lightening it all over can be harsh and require a lot of maintenance. Highlighting with a neutral, lighter colour is much more manageable.

Ashy plantium

Best on: Fair, medium or dark skin tones, medium to thick hair

Upkeep: This colour is very high maintenance. “My holy grail for this colour is shampoo and conditioner paired with a  used as either a leave-in or a mask,” says Medina. He also recommends working a purple shampoo and conditioner into your routine once a week to tone down brassiness.

Best on: Fair or medium skin tones, medium to thick hair

Upkeep: “Pastels have to be put on a base of light blonde, or lighter,” says Dove, and if that involves bleaching your hair, it’ll need extra care to help it recover. A nourishing shampoo and conditioner formulated for processed and coloured hair are key, as well as a treatment mask. Dove recommends the .

Upkeep: This colour trend is very easy to maintain. “After you shampoo and condition your hair, I’d suggest using , but apply it only on the middle and ends of your hair to help preserve colour,” Medina says.

Multi-tonal brown

Upkeep: “I love this colour because it’s universal and very low maintenance,” says Medina. He suggests using a gentle shampoo and conditioner that won’t strip your hair’s natural oils or break down the colour.
